Sobre Meuse (55)
The Département de la Meuse is a French territorial authority belonging to the category of "départements," located in the Grand Est region in northeastern France. Its administrative center is Bar-le-Duc, and it includes the arrondissements of Commercy and Verdun. Numbered 55, it is part of the administrative structure established in France following the Revolution, when the former provinces of Lorraine, Barrois, and the Trois-Évêchés were reorganized into départements at the end of the eighteenth century.
The Meuse territory is largely rural, characterized by agricultural, forested, and hilly landscapes, particularly around the Argonne forest and the Meuse valley. The department also retains a distinctive historical memory linked to the First World War, as the Verdun area was the site of major battles. Following the 2016 territorial reform, Meuse became part of the Grand Est administrative region, alongside other former départements from Lorraine, Alsace, and Champagne-Ardenne.
As a territorial authority, the Département de la Meuse is governed by an elected departmental council responsible for exercising the powers assigned to French départements. These include social welfare functions such as support for elderly and disabled residents, child protection, and insertion programs, as well as management of departmental roads, construction and maintenance of middle schools ("collèges"), and initiatives related to rural development, culture, heritage, tourism, and the environment. The Département also works in cooperation with municipalities and intercommunal bodies within its territory, operating within the broader framework of French public administration.
The website meuse.fr is the official institutional site of the Département de la Meuse, presenting its missions, public actions, and information about the services available to residents of the territory.
