Sobre Lot (46)

The Lot is a French department located in the Occitanie region, in southwestern France. Created in 1790 during the administrative reorganization following the French Revolution, it takes its name from the river that flows through its territory and largely corresponds to the former province of Quercy. Its prefecture is the town of Cahors. The department borders Corrèze, Cantal, Aveyron, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne and Dordogne. As a territorial authority, the Lot is administered by a departmental council, an elected assembly responsible for exercising the powers assigned to French departments. These include social welfare functions, such as support for elderly and disabled residents and child protection services, as well as management of the departmental road network, the construction and maintenance of middle schools (collèges), and support for territorial planning policies. The council also acts in the fields of culture, sport, the environment and rural development. The territory of the Lot is largely rural, characterized by limestone plateau landscapes, valleys and notable natural sites. It contains significant architectural and natural heritage, including listed villages and sites as well as decorated caves. The local economy relies notably on agriculture, viticulture and heritage tourism, which represent important components of the department's activity. The Lot is part of the broader Occitanie region, alongside other departments in southwestern France, and participates in regional territorial cooperation initiatives. The website lot.fr is the institutional website of the departmental council of the Lot, presenting the authority's responsibilities, news and practical information, as well as online services intended for residents of the department.
