Sobre Loiret (45)
The Loiret is a French department located in the Centre-Val de Loire region, with Orléans as its administrative center. Established in 1790 during the administrative reorganization of revolutionary France, it takes its name from the Loiret river, a small tributary of the Loire. The territory extends on both sides of the river, between the Beauce plain to the north, the Sologne to the south, and the Gâtinais to the east, offering a diversity of rural, forested, and urban landscapes. The Departmental Council of Loiret constitutes the deliberative body of this territorial authority, composed of departmental councilors elected by direct universal suffrage for six-year terms, representing the various cantons across the territory.
As a territorial authority, the Department of Loiret exercises competencies defined by law, particularly in social action and solidarity toward elderly people, people with disabilities, and families facing difficulties. It also intervenes in the management and maintenance of departmental roads, the construction and operation of middle schools, as well as in supporting local cultural, sporting, and tourism policies. The Department additionally plays a role in territorial planning, supporting municipalities and intermunicipal bodies in various infrastructure and local development projects.
Loiret maintains institutional relationships with other levels of local government present in its territory, notably municipalities, intermunicipal groupings, and the Centre-Val de Loire region, within the framework of the distribution of competencies specific to French administrative organization. Its geographic position, close to the Paris region and crossed by several major communication routes, makes it a transitional territory between Île-de-France and the Loire Valley, characterized by a diversified economy combining agricultural, industrial, and service activities.
The website loiret.fr is the official institutional website of the Department of Loiret, presenting the authority's competencies, news, administrative procedures, and services offered to residents.
