Sobre Vendée (85)
The Département de la Vendée is a French territorial collectivity established in 1790 during the administrative reorganization of the national territory, formed from part of the former province of Poitou. It is one of the collectivities making up the Pays de la Loire region in western France, with its administrative center located in the town of La Roche-sur-Yon. The institution is governed by a departmental council, a deliberative assembly composed of elected representatives from the territory's cantons, responsible for defining and implementing public policies within its area of competence.
Geographically, Vendée is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and by several neighboring departments, including Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Deux-Sèvres, and Charente-Maritime. Its territory features a wide variety of landscapes, alternating between coastal areas, marshlands, bocage countryside, and rural spaces, and includes islands such as Île d'Yeu and part of Île de Noirmoutier. This configuration gives the department a distinct territorial identity, combining maritime and rural characteristics.
As a territorial collectivity, the Department exercises competencies defined by law across several areas, including social welfare and solidarity, maintenance and development of the departmental road network, management of secondary schools (collèges), support for cultural, sporting, and tourism policies, as well as assistance with economic development and spatial planning. It also plays a role in preserving natural and built heritage, working alongside municipalities, intercommunal bodies, and other levels of local government present in its territory. Its actions are part of the broader framework of decentralized public policy in France, in coordination with the State and the region.
The website vendee.fr is the official institutional site of the Department, presenting its missions, organization, and news, as well as practical information and online services intended for residents and users of the territory.
