Sobre Gironde (33)
The Department of Gironde is a French territorial authority established during the administrative reorganisation of 1790, based on the former province of Guyenne. It is one of the departments making up the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France, with Bordeaux serving as its administrative seat and also hosting the regional prefecture. Gironde is recognised as the largest department in mainland France by surface area, a fact that shapes the organisation of its services and the structure of its territory.
The territory of Gironde displays considerable geographical diversity, ranging from the Atlantic coastline and its dune systems in the west to the renowned Bordeaux vineyards and the rural Entre-deux-Mers area in the east, alongside the extensive Landes forest to the south. This diversity is reflected in an administrative organisation composed of several districts, cantons and municipalities, centred around the Bordeaux metropolitan area, the department's main urban and economic hub, along with numerous medium-sized towns spread across the territory.
As a territorial authority, the Department of Gironde exercises competencies defined by law, particularly in social welfare and solidarity toward elderly people, people with disabilities, or those facing hardship, as well as in managing secondary schools, maintaining departmental roads, and acting in the fields of culture, the environment and territorial planning. It also supports municipalities and intermunicipal bodies in development and infrastructure projects. The authority is governed by a departmental council made up of elected representatives from the territory's cantons, who set the institution's political and budgetary direction.
The website gironde.fr is the official website of the Department of Gironde, providing institutional information along with online services related to the department's areas of responsibility.
