Sobre Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region is a French territorial authority created on 1 January 2016 as part of the territorial reform introduced by the NOTRe law, through the merger of the former regions of Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. This administrative reorganization was part of a broader movement to redraw the boundaries of French regions in order to create larger territorial units. The authority took on the full range of competences assigned to regions under French legislation, while inheriting the institutional and administrative legacy of the three former entities it now encompasses. In terms of surface area, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest region in metropolitan France. Located in the southwestern part of the country, it stretches from the banks of the Loire to the Spanish border and the Pyrenees, and borders the Atlantic Ocean along an extensive coastline. Its territory comprises twelve departments, inherited from the former divisions of Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. The region displays a wide diversity of landscapes, ranging from the Atlantic coast to mountain ranges, as well as rural, wine-growing and forested areas, along with several urban centers including Bordeaux, the seat of the regional executive. As a territorial authority, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region exercises the competences assigned to French regions, notably in economic development, spatial planning, management of regional transport, vocational training and apprenticeships, as well as the administration of secondary schools. It also acts in the fields of culture, heritage, environment and territorial cooperation, in coordination with the departments, intercommunal bodies and municipalities that make up its territory. Its action is guided by the orientations set by the regional council, a deliberative assembly elected by universal suffrage. The website nouvelle-aquitaine.fr is the institutional website of the authority, presenting its missions, news, support schemes and online procedures available to residents, businesses and stakeholders of the territory.
