About Marcheprime
Marcheprime is a French commune located in the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It belongs to the arrondissement of Bordeaux and lies in the southern part of the department, near the Arcachon basin, within the forested area of the Landes de Gascogne. Its territory is crossed by road and rail links connecting Bordeaux to the Atlantic coast, which contributed to its development over time.
The commune is relatively recent in its current administrative form: it was established in the mid-twentieth century through the separation of parts of the neighboring communes of Le Barp and Salles, in a context of growth linked to industrial activity, particularly in the glass sector, as well as the presence of a railway station on the line connecting Bordeaux to Arcachon. This origin partly explains the layout of its urban area, structured around the railway site and the activity zones that developed nearby over the following decades.
As a local authority, Marcheprime exercises the usual competences of a French commune: civil registry, urban planning, management of local schools, sports and cultural facilities, maintenance of communal roads and organization of local public services. It is administered by an elected municipal council and a mayor, and forms part of an intercommunal structure grouping several communes in the area, with which it shares certain competences such as spatial planning, economic development and environmental management, particularly regarding the surrounding forest and nearby wetlands. It also maintains cooperative relations with other local authorities of the Arcachon basin.
