About Bordeaux
Bordeaux is a city in south-west France, capital of the Gironde department and seat of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The sixth-largest city in the country, it sits at the heart of Bordeaux Métropole, a 28-commune area of more than a million inhabitants. Set on the Garonne river, it grew as a major trading port whose eighteenth-century golden age shaped an exceptional classical cityscape.
That heritage earns it worldwide recognition: the "Port of the Moon" has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007, and the city draws steady tourism around its architecture, riverfront and the Cité du Vin. Bordeaux remains inseparable from its world-famous vineyards, whose wine trade still underpins part of its economy.
Its contemporary economy is far more diversified, however — aerospace, digital, health, research and higher education, with one of France's largest universities. High-speed rail places Bordeaux about two hours from Paris. bordeaux.fr is the city council's official portal: online administrative procedures, municipal information, cultural listings and local services for residents.
