Sobre Somme (80)
The Département de la Somme is a French territorial authority established in 1790 during the administrative reorganisation of revolutionary France, formed from part of the former province of Picardy. It constitutes one of the administrative divisions and decentralised local authorities of the French Republic, governed by a departmental council elected by direct universal suffrage and responsible for administering local affairs within the powers assigned to departments by law.
Located in northern France, within the Hauts-de-France region, the Somme department takes its name from the river that flows through it from east to west before reaching the English Channel. It borders the departments of Pas-de-Calais, Nord, Aisne, Oise and Seine-Maritime. Its administrative centre is the city of Amiens, which hosts the prefecture and the seat of the departmental assembly. The territory is organised into several arrondissements, cantons and communes, combining urban areas, rural land and a coastline facing the Channel.
Like other French departments, the authority exercises powers in various areas defined by law, notably social welfare and support for elderly, disabled or vulnerable residents, the management and maintenance of departmental roads, the construction and operation of secondary schools (collèges), and support for local cultural, heritage, sporting and tourism initiatives. It also acts in the fields of environmental management, spatial planning and local development, in coordination with other levels of local government and state services present in the territory.
The website somme.fr is the official website of the Département de la Somme, presenting the authority's missions, news and the services it offers to residents and local stakeholders.
