Sobre Métropole de Metz
The Metz Métropole (Metropolis of Metz) is a public establishment for intercommunal cooperation (EPCI) holding metropolitan status, governed by French local government law. It is located in the Moselle department, within the Grand Est region in northeastern France, and brings together the central city of Metz along with several dozen surrounding municipalities forming a unified living area around the Moselle valley.
Resulting from a gradual evolution of intercommunal structures in the Metz area, this authority acquired metropolitan status under territorial reform legislation, succeeding a former urban community. This change in status grants it broader competences compared to other forms of intercommunal cooperation, while continuing a long-standing cooperation among the municipalities of the Metz area in matters of planning and local public services.
As a territorial authority, Metz Métropole exercises competences in various fields affecting the daily life of residents within its territory: economic development, spatial planning, organization of urban transport, housing policy, water management and sanitation, waste collection and treatment, and environmental protection. It also acts in urban policy matters, supports cultural and sporting facilities of metropolitan interest, and participates in urban planning across its area. Its action is coordinated with that of member municipalities, which retain their own competences not transferred, as well as with other levels of local government present in the territory, such as the Moselle department and the Grand Est region.
The website metzmetropole.fr is the official institutional site of this authority, presenting its missions, organization, news, and practical information intended for residents and stakeholders of the territory.
