Sobre Vienne (86)
The Département de la Vienne is a French territorial authority operating at the department level, located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in west-central France. It takes its name from the Vienne river that flows through its territory and is identified by the administrative number 86 within the French classification system. Its prefecture is Poitiers, while Châtellerault and Montmorillon serve as sub-prefectures. The territory borders the departments of Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, Indre, Indre-et-Loire and Haute-Vienne.
The institution originates from the administrative reorganization of France carried out at the end of the eighteenth century, when the national territory was divided into departments. Since then, the Vienne has undergone several institutional changes, notably its attachment to the former Poitou-Charentes region, followed by its integration into the newly formed Nouvelle-Aquitaine region following the 2015 territorial reform, which merged several historical regions. The department nonetheless retains its own administrative identity within this broader regional structure.
As a territorial authority, the Département de la Vienne exercises competencies defined by French law, including social welfare and support for elderly, disabled or vulnerable residents, management of public secondary schools (collèges), maintenance of departmental roads, spatial planning, cultural and sports development, as well as environmental protection and support for local tourism. Its deliberative body, the conseil départemental, is composed of elected representatives from the territory's cantons and is responsible for voting the budget and setting the collectivity's policy orientations. The departmental administration implements these public policies through technical and administrative services spread across the territory.
The website lavienne86.fr is the official site of the Département de la Vienne, presenting the authority's missions and activities along with various information and administrative procedures intended for residents of the territory.
