Sobre Hautes-Alpes (05)
The Hautes-Alpes department is a French territorial authority located in the southeastern part of the country, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its territory, characterized by the mountainous terrain typical of the Southern Alps, borders several neighboring departments, including Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Isère, Alpes-Maritimes, and Drôme, as well as a frontier with Italy. The department's administrative center is the city of Gap, which hosts the headquarters of the departmental administration. Like other French departments, Hautes-Alpes was established during the French Revolution, as part of the administrative reorganization of the national territory introduced in 1790.
As a territorial authority, the Hautes-Alpes department exercises competencies defined by law in several areas of public action. It is notably involved in the management of departmental roads, social action and solidarity toward people in difficulty, support for elderly and disabled persons, the management of secondary schools (collèges), and support for regional planning and local development policies. The department also contributes to the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of its territory, which is marked by several notable natural sites and by tourism activity related in particular to mountain sports.
The institution is administered by a departmental council, composed of elected representatives from the territory's various cantons, which votes the budget and defines the guidelines for public policies implemented by the departmental services. The president of the departmental council leads the local executive branch and represents the authority in its relations with other administrative levels, notably the region and the State.
The website hautes-alpes.fr is the institutional site of the Hautes-Alpes department, presenting the authority's areas of competence, its news, administrative procedures, and various practical information intended for residents and users of the territory.
