Sobre Landes (40)

The Department of Landes is a French territorial authority established in 1790 during the administrative reorganization of the national territory, formed from part of the former province of Gascony. It is one of the departments of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France and is administered by a departmental council whose seat is located in Mont-de-Marsan, the department's prefecture. Dax serves as its subprefecture. The territory of Landes is characterized by an Atlantic coastline lined with dunes and beaches, as well as by an extensive forested area that forms one of the largest woodland expanses in Western Europe. It borders the departments of Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, Gers, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. This geographical setting has shaped a local economy historically linked to forestry, agriculture—particularly corn cultivation and livestock farming associated with regional food products—as well as thermal spa activity, with several well-known spa towns, and coastal tourism along the shoreline. As a territorial authority, the Department of Landes exercises competencies assigned to it by law in several areas: social and welfare support, particularly for elderly and disabled residents, the maintenance and development of the departmental road network, the management of secondary schools (collèges), and contributions to spatial planning, environmental protection, cultural and sporting development, and support for rural and associative life. It also provides assistance to municipalities and intermunicipal bodies within the territory as part of broader policies of territorial solidarity. The website landes.fr is the official portal of the Department of Landes, providing institutional information, news related to departmental policies, and online services and procedures intended for residents and local stakeholders.
