The Department of Charente is a French territorial collectivity created in 1790 as part of the administrative reorganization following the French Revolution, formed from a portion of the former province of Angoumois along with fragments of neighboring territories. It has since existed as an administrative district and a full-fledged collectivity, governed by an elected departmental council responsible for defining local policy orientations and adopting the collectivity's budget.
Located in the southwestern quarter of France, within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the Department of Charente borders the departments of Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Haute-Vienne, Vienne and Deux-Sèvres.
