Sobre Charente (16)
The Department of Charente is a French territorial collectivity created in 1790 as part of the administrative reorganization following the French Revolution, formed from a portion of the former province of Angoumois along with fragments of neighboring territories. It has since existed as an administrative district and a full-fledged collectivity, governed by an elected departmental council responsible for defining local policy orientations and adopting the collectivity's budget.
Located in the southwestern quarter of France, within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the Department of Charente borders the departments of Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Haute-Vienne, Vienne and Deux-Sèvres. Its administrative seat is the town of Angoulême, which concentrates a significant share of the territory's administrative, economic and cultural functions. The department is characterized by a network of rural communes and small towns, organized around several local living areas and crossed by the Charente river, from which it takes its name.
As a territorial collectivity, the Department of Charente exercises competencies defined by law, particularly in the areas of social action and solidarity toward elderly people and people with disabilities, management of middle schools (collèges), maintenance of departmental roads, support for territorial solidarity, and assistance to municipalities. It also acts in the fields of culture, heritage, tourism and territorial planning, in coordination with other levels of French administration, including the State, the region and intermunicipal bodies. Its administrative services, distributed between the departmental headquarters and various local offices, ensure the implementation of these public policies close to residents.
The website lacharente.fr is the official website of the Department of Charente, presenting its missions, institutional news, and practical information about the services offered to residents of the territory.
