The Doubs is a French department located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, in eastern France. It takes its name from the river that flows through it, whose winding course forms part of its natural border with Switzerland. Its territory extends from the Jura mountain range, characterized by mountainous and forested terrain, to more urbanized plains in the northwest. Besançon, a historic city known for its architectural heritage and industrial past linked to watchmaking, serves as its prefecture and the seat of departmental institutions.
As a territorial collectivity, the Doubs department constitutes a level of French public administration, governed by an elected deliberative assembly, the departmental council, which votes the budget and determines the main directions of local public action.
