Sobre Creuse (23)
The Département of Creuse is a French territorial authority with departmental status, located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Established in 1790 during the national administrative reorganization, it takes its name from the river that runs through it and historically belongs to the former province of Limousin. Its administrative center is the town of Guéret, which houses the department's main institutions, including the departmental council's headquarters and administrative services.
Situated on the Massif Central, in a predominantly rural area characterized by plateaus and hills, the department borders several other departments within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region as well as territories belonging to other administrative regions. Its economy has historically relied on agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry, while heritage and nature-based tourism constitute a development focus for local authorities. The low population density and predominantly rural nature of the territory shape the public policies implemented by the authority.
The Département exercises the responsibilities assigned by law to French departmental authorities, particularly in the areas of social welfare and support for elderly, disabled, or vulnerable individuals, management of public secondary schools, maintenance of the departmental road network, territorial planning, and support for rural development. It also acts in the fields of culture, heritage, the environment, and tourism, in coordination with other levels of local government, notably the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and local intercommunal bodies. The departmental council, an elected deliberative assembly, sets the budgetary and policy directions of the authority within the scope of powers granted under French local government law.
The website creuse.fr is the official institutional site of the Département of Creuse, presenting the authority's responsibilities, news, administrative procedures, and public services offered to residents of the territory.
