The Département of Aveyron is a French territorial authority within the Occitanie region, in the south of the country. Its territory, characterized by contrasting landscapes of limestone plateaus, valleys, the Lévézou uplands and the foothills of the Massif Central, covers one of the largest areas among French departments. Its administrative center is Rodez, which hosts the headquarters of the departmental council and the main administrative bodies. Aveyron is organized into several arrondissements and cantons, structuring a predominantly rural territory dotted with small towns and villages.
Established during the administrative reorganization of France at the end of the eighteenth century, the department inherited a territory roughly corresponding to the former province of Rouergue.
