Sobre Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region is a French territorial authority created on 1 January 2016, resulting from the merger of the former Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes regions as part of the 2015 territorial reform that reduced the number of metropolitan regions in France. It constitutes an intermediate level of French public administration, governed by an elected deliberative assembly, the regional council, chosen through direct universal suffrage, and by an executive headed by a president. Its main institutional seat is located in Lyon, which also serves as the region's administrative capital.
The region's territory covers a large part of southeastern France, comprising twelve departments inherited from the two former entities: Ain, Allier, Ardèche, Cantal, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. This extensive geographic area combines dense urban centers, notably around the metropolitan areas of Lyon, Grenoble, Saint-Étienne and Clermont-Ferrand, with rural and mountainous territories including parts of the Alpine range and the Massif Central.
As a territorial authority, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region exercises competencies defined by law, particularly in economic development, spatial planning, vocational training, management of secondary schools, regional transportation, and support for culture, tourism and the environment. It also participates in cooperation policies with other French and European authorities, and is involved in planning major facilities and infrastructure shaping its territory. Its activities fall within the broader framework of France's decentralized administrative organization.
The website auvergnerhonealpes.fr is the official website of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, presenting its missions, institutional organization, news, support programs and online services intended for residents, businesses and local authorities across the territory.
