Sobre Département Haute-Garonne
The Haute-Garonne department is a French territorial collectivity established in 1790 during the administrative reorganization that followed the French Revolution, as part of the division of the national territory into departments. Its name derives from the Garonne, a river that flows through the territory from south to north. Located in southwestern France, it belongs to the Occitanie region and has Toulouse as its prefecture, which also serves as the department's main urban and administrative center. The territory extends from the Pyrenean foothills in the south to the plains and hillsides of the Lauragais and Toulousain areas, offering a mix of rural, suburban, and urban landscapes.
The department exercises competencies defined by law, spread across several areas of intervention. It is notably involved in social and medico-social action, particularly concerning elderly people, people with disabilities, and child welfare, as well as in managing the departmental road network. It also oversees the construction and maintenance of public secondary schools (collèges), participates in territorial planning, supports cultural, sporting, and environmental policies, and contributes to organizing certain transport services.
Administered by a departmental council composed of locally elected officials and headed by a president chosen among its members, the department is part of the French territorial organization alongside municipalities, intercommunal public cooperation bodies, the Occitanie region, and the State. It works with these various levels of administration to implement local public policies, while maintaining its own management autonomy within its designated areas of competence.
The website haute-garonne.fr is the department's official website, presenting its missions, institutional organization, and public policies, along with services and practical information intended for residents and local stakeholders.
