About Communauté d'agglomération - Provence Alpes agglomération
Provence Alpes agglomération is a French public inter-municipal cooperation body (EPCI) classified as a communauté d'agglomération. It is located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This intercommunal structure resulted from the merger of several former communautés de communes in the area, as part of the successive reforms aimed at rationalising France's intercommunal map. Its administrative seat is located in the Sisteronais-Buëch area, one of the main urban hubs in the northern part of the department.
The agglomeration brings together a set of rural and urban municipalities spread across a territory characterised by mid-mountain terrain, crossed by the Durance valley. This geographical scope gives the body a particular role in developing a territory that is at once agricultural, industrial and touristic, located between the Alpine foothills and the Provençal plains. The communauté d'agglomération exercises its competences over an area combining economic activity zones, protected natural spaces and central towns providing local services.
Like any French communauté d'agglomération, Provence Alpes agglomération exercises mandatory and optional competences defined by the general code of local authorities, particularly in economic development, spatial planning of the community area, social housing balance, urban policy, waste management, road infrastructure and environmental protection. It also operates in the fields of tourism, transport and cultural action across its territory. It thus constitutes an intermediate level of local governance between member municipalities and the departmental and regional authorities, responsible for pooling certain public services and carrying forward structuring projects for the wider living area concerned. The website provencealpesagglo.fr is the official institutional site of this local authority, presenting its competences, news, services for residents and businesses, and practical information regarding its administrative operation.
