About Métropole de Grand Paris
The Métropole du Grand Paris is a public inter-municipal cooperation body with a special legal status, established by the law on the modernisation of territorial public action and the affirmation of metropolitan areas of 27 January 2014, and formally implemented on 1 January 2016. This inter-municipal structure was designed to organise, at a broader scale, certain responsibilities previously held by municipalities or other territorial levels, within the context of a reform of the administrative organisation of the Paris metropolitan area.
Its area covers the city of Paris as well as all the municipalities of the Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne departments, together with several municipalities from the outer ring that chose to join it. It thus brings together a significant number of municipalities organised into public territorial establishments, an intermediate level created alongside the metropolis itself. Its headquarters are located in Paris, at the centre of the territory it administers.
The Métropole du Grand Paris exercises responsibilities relating to spatial planning of the metropolitan area, local housing policy, economic, social and cultural development, as well as the protection and enhancement of the environment and living conditions. It is notably involved in developing strategic planning documents, defining housing orientations, and carrying out actions linked to ecological transition across the metropolitan territory. It serves as a coordination space between member municipalities and other territorial authorities, without replacing their own responsibilities, but rather aligning public policies at a scale broader than that of individual municipalities or pre-existing inter-municipal structures.
