About Communauté d'agglomération - Grand Dax
The Communauté d'agglomération Grand Dax is a French public inter-municipal cooperation body (EPCI), governed by local government law. It brings together several municipalities located in the Landes department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, centred on the town of Dax, a spa town recognised for its thermal waters and Gallo-Roman heritage. The resulting territory spans urban, peri-urban and rural areas, close to the Atlantic coastline and the Bordeaux metropolitan area.
This inter-municipal structure forms part of the territorial rationalisation movement undertaken in France since the 1990s and reinforced by successive laws on inter-municipal cooperation. Grand Dax has progressively expanded its scope and powers, succeeding earlier forms of cooperation among neighbouring municipalities. Its organisation rests on a community council made up of elected representatives designated by member municipalities, together with a president and an executive body responsible for implementing community policies.
The agglomeration exercises powers in various fields such as economic development, spatial planning, housing, public transport, water and sanitation management, as well as the promotion of thermal and tourism heritage. It also supports cultural and sporting facilities of community interest, urban policy, and environmental protection, particularly the preservation of natural areas linked to the waterways crossing its territory. It thus constitutes an intermediate level of governance between municipalities and the department, tasked with pooling certain services and carrying out structuring projects at the scale of the living area.
