About Métropole d'Aix-Marseille-Provence
The Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis is a public establishment for inter-municipal cooperation with its own tax authority, created on 1 January 2016 pursuant to the French law on the modernisation of territorial public action and the strengthening of metropolitan areas. It resulted from the merger of several pre-existing inter-municipal structures, including the Marseille Provence Métropole urban community and the Pays d'Aix urban agglomeration community, along with other inter-municipal bodies within the territory. As a territorial authority, the metropolis exercises powers in various fields such as economic development, spatial planning across the metropolitan area, transport and mobility, housing policy, waste management, the environment, and cultural and sporting development of metropolitan interest. It coordinates the action of its member municipalities on issues extending beyond municipal boundaries, while working alongside other levels of territorial authorities present in the area, notably the department and the region. Its institutional role is to carry a development strategy across a vast urban and peri-urban basin characterised by considerable diversity in landscapes and economic activities.
