Sobre Yonne (89)
The department of Yonne is a French territorial authority belonging to the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. It was created during the French Revolution, in 1790, as part of the national administrative reorganization, and takes its name from the river that runs through it. Its administrative center is Auxerre, a city that hosts the main departmental institutions. The territory extends across part of the wider Paris basin, at the border between Île-de-France and the southern part of Burgundy, and is characterized by a mix of rural, wine-growing and forested landscapes, along with several towns and small cities that structure its territorial organization.
As a territorial authority, the department exercises competences defined by law, particularly in the fields of social action, support for elderly and disabled people, child protection, maintenance of departmental roads, management of certain secondary schools, and rural territorial planning. It also provides support to municipalities and intermunicipal structures through territorial engineering, assistance for local investment, and infrastructure development. These missions are part of the broader framework of French administrative decentralization, which assigns departments an intermediary role between the State, the regions and the municipalities.
The department is administered by a departmental council, a deliberative assembly elected by direct universal suffrage, whose members are chosen by canton. This body votes the departmental budget and defines the orientations of local public policies. The positioning of the Yonne department is thus part of the French territorial organization, alongside the other departments of the region, with which it shares certain competences and administrative cooperation, particularly regarding planning and local economic development.
The website yonne.fr is the official institutional website of the department, presenting its missions, news, public services and various practical information intended for residents and users of the territory.
