The Gard is a French department located in the Occitanie region, in the south of the country. Established in 1790 during the administrative reorganization of the national territory following the French Revolution, it takes its name from the Gardon, a river that flows through part of its territory. Its prefecture is Nîmes, which serves as the main urban and administrative center of the department.
The Gard extends from the foothills of the Cévennes in the northwest to the Mediterranean coastline in the southeast, where it has a limited maritime frontage. It borders the departments of Ardèche, Lozère, Hérault, Vaucluse, and Bouches-du-Rhône, and lies close to the Rhône valley. The territory features diverse landscapes, ranging from the Cévennes highlands to vineyard plains and Camargue wetlands. Besides Nîmes, several towns structure the territory, including Alès, Bagnols-sur-Cèze, and Le Vigan, which function as sub-prefectures or local hubs.
