Sobre Marne (51)

The Department of Marne is a French territorial collectivity established in 1790 during the administrative reorganization that followed the French Revolution. It takes its name from the Marne river, which flows through its territory. Its administrative center is Châlons-en-Champagne, home to the main departmental institutions, while Reims is the most populous city within the territory. The department is now part of the Grand Est region, formed from the merger of the former Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine regions. Located in northeastern France, the Marne department borders Ardennes, Meuse, Haute-Marne, Aube, Seine-et-Marne, and Aisne. It is organized into several arrondissements comprising numerous communes of varying size, ranging from large towns to small rural communities. The territory is historically associated with Champagne, a renowned wine-producing region, and features a diversity of landscapes combining agricultural plains, vineyards, and urban areas. As a territorial collectivity, the Department of Marne exercises competencies defined by French law, particularly in the areas of social welfare, management of departmental roads, construction and maintenance of secondary schools (collèges), and support for local development, culture, and the environment. It is administered by a departmental council composed of elected representatives from the territory's various cantons, led by a president elected among its members. This institution constitutes an intermediate level of French territorial administration, between municipalities and the region, responsible for implementing local public policies for the benefit of residents and local economic actors. The marne.fr website is the official website of the Department of Marne, where institutional information and online services related to the collectivity's competencies and activities are made available.
