Sobre Territoire de Belfort (90)
The Territoire de Belfort is a French department located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, at the northeastern edge of the country, close to the Swiss and German borders. It is the smallest department of metropolitan France in terms of area, excluding those in the Île-de-France region. Its prefecture, Belfort, is also its most populous municipality. The department owes its name and distinct identity to its particular history: separated from the Haut-Rhin department after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, it remained part of France while the rest of Alsace came under German administration, before becoming a full-fledged department in 1922.
As a territorial authority, the Department of Territoire de Belfort exercises the responsibilities assigned by law to French departments. It is involved notably in social welfare and solidarity, the management of secondary schools (collèges), the maintenance of departmental roads, and support for local policies related to planning, culture, and sport. It also plays a coordinating role between the municipalities within its jurisdiction and the regional and national levels, contributing to the implementation of local public policies for the benefit of residents and local economic actors.
The territory administered by the department features a varied geography, combining urban areas around Belfort with rural and natural spaces, particularly in the Vosges mountain range and the Belfort Gap, a historic passageway between the Rhine and Rhône basins. The local economy has traditionally relied on industry, particularly in the mechanical and energy sectors, while gradually diversifying into other service-oriented and technological activities. The elected departmental council, as the deliberative body, sets the strategic direction of the authority and oversees the implementation of departmental public policies.
The website territoiredebelfort.fr is the official institutional website of the departmental council, presenting the authority's responsibilities, news, and administrative services offered to residents and local stakeholders.
