Sobre Loire-Atlantique (44)
The department of Loire-Atlantique is a French territorial authority created in 1790 under the name Loire-Inférieure, before adopting its current name in 1957. It is one of the administrative divisions established during the reorganization of the national territory at the time of the French Revolution and has retained, through successive reforms, the status of a full-fledged local authority governed by an elected deliberative assembly, the departmental council, and an executive headed by its president.
Located in western France, the department belongs to the Pays de la Loire region, of which it is one of the five constituent departments. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west and is adjacent to the departments of Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Mayenne, Maine-et-Loire and Vendée. Its prefecture, Nantes, is also its most populous city and serves as the main urban, administrative and economic center of the territory, alongside other towns such as Saint-Nazaire.
As a territorial authority, the department of Loire-Atlantique exercises competencies defined by law across several areas of local public action. It is notably involved in social welfare and solidarity, the management of secondary schools known as collèges, the maintenance and development of the departmental road network, as well as culture, heritage, tourism and environmental matters. It also contributes to the funding and coordination of public policies related to territorial planning, working alongside municipalities, intercommunal bodies and the regional authority. Its activities form part of the broader decentralized organization of the French Republic, in which departments serve as an intermediate administrative level between municipalities and regions.
The website loire-atlantique.fr is the institutional website of the department, presenting its missions, news, public policies, as well as practical information and services intended for residents of the territory.
