The Ille-et-Vilaine department is a French territorial authority created in 1790 as part of the administrative reorganization carried out during the French Revolution, which divided the national territory into departments. Its name derives from the two rivers, the Ille and the Vilaine, that flow through its territory. Located in western France, it belongs to the Brittany region and has a coastline on the English Channel to the north, while also extending inland. Its prefecture is established in Rennes, which also serves as the department's main administrative, academic and economic center.
