Sobre Ille-et-Vilaine (35)
The Ille-et-Vilaine department is a French territorial authority created in 1790 as part of the administrative reorganization carried out during the French Revolution, which divided the national territory into departments. Its name derives from the two rivers, the Ille and the Vilaine, that flow through its territory. Located in western France, it belongs to the Brittany region and has a coastline on the English Channel to the north, while also extending inland. Its prefecture is established in Rennes, which also serves as the department's main administrative, academic and economic center. The territory is composed of several districts and a network of municipalities, reflecting an organization that is both urban, centered around the Rennes metropolitan area, and rural, with diverse agricultural and coastal zones.
As a territorial authority, the department exercises competences defined by law in several areas of public action. It notably intervenes in the field of social action and solidarity, including assistance to elderly people, people with disabilities and child welfare services. It also manages and maintains part of the departmental road network, participates in the funding and operation of secondary schools (collèges), and supports policies related to culture, sport, tourism and the environment. These missions are carried out in coordination with municipalities, intermunicipal bodies, the Brittany region and state services present in the territory.
The departmental council, an assembly elected by direct universal suffrage, constitutes the deliberative body of the authority. It approves the budget, defines policy orientations and oversees their implementation, under the authority of its president. The departmental administration, organized into directorates and services, implements these decisions on a daily basis, relying on facilities distributed across the territory to ensure the proximity of public services to residents and local stakeholders.
The website ille-et-vilaine.fr is the institutional website of the Ille-et-Vilaine department, presenting its missions, organization and public policy news, along with practical information and procedures intended for residents and local stakeholders.
