Sobre Département Indre-et-Loire
The Département of Indre-et-Loire is a French territorial authority established in 1790 as part of the administrative reorganisation of the national territory. Its name derives from the two rivers crossing its territory, the Indre and the Loire, and its boundaries correspond approximately to those of the former province of Touraine. The prefecture is located in Tours, which serves as the main administrative, economic and cultural centre of the departmental territory.
The department is part of the Centre-Val de Loire region and shares borders with several neighbouring departments, including Loir-et-Cher, Maine-et-Loire, Vienne and Indre. Its territory combines urban areas organised around the Tours metropolitan area with extensive rural and agricultural zones, crossed by the Loire Valley, known for its châteaux and recognised heritage sites. This geographic diversity shapes the administrative organisation and the public policies implemented at the departmental level.
Like any territorial authority of this level in France, the Département of Indre-et-Loire exercises competences defined by law, particularly in the field of social action, managing solidarity schemes intended for families, elderly people and people with disabilities.
