Sobre Cantal (15)
Cantal is a French department located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in the heart of the Massif Central. Its territory is shaped by the volcanic massif from which it takes its name, together with valleys and high plateaus that give the area its distinctive relief. The prefecture is Aurillac, a town that hosts part of the department's administrative functions, alongside sub-prefectures that organize the territory into districts. Established during the French Revolution in 1790, when the kingdom was divided into departments, Cantal is one of France's historic territorial collectivities.
As a territorial collectivity, the Department of Cantal is administered by a departmental council, an assembly elected by direct universal suffrage whose members are chosen in departmental elections. This body elects a president from among its members, who leads the departmental executive and represents the collectivity in its institutional relations. The departmental council adopts the budget, sets policy orientations, and passes resolutions that guide the collectivity's action across its territory.
The Department's responsibilities fall within the framework of powers assigned by law to French departmental collectivities. It is notably active in social welfare, particularly concerning elderly people, people with disabilities, and child protection, as well as in managing social integration programs. It also manages part of the departmental road network, participates in territorial planning, supports rural development, and contributes to the management of public middle schools (collèges). The Department additionally plays a role in preserving local heritage, supporting municipalities, and coordinating certain cultural and tourism policies across its territory.
The cantal.fr website is the official institutional site of the Department of Cantal, presenting the collectivity's missions, news, and information related to its administrative services and procedures.
