Bordeaux Métropole is a public inter-municipal cooperation body holding metropolitan status under French local government law. It brings together twenty-eight communes in the Gironde department, within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, centered on the city of Bordeaux. This inter-communal structure exercises powers transferred to it by its member communes in areas such as spatial planning, urban transport, economic development, housing, waste management, water and sanitation services, and road maintenance.
The institution originates from the Communauté urbaine de Bordeaux, established in 1968, one of the first urban communities created in France under legislation organizing inter-municipal cooperation for large urban areas. On 1 January 2015, this urban community was transformed into a métropole, a status created by legislation modernizing public territorial action and strengthening metropolitan areas, thereby expanding its powers and institutional role within France's territorial organization. Bordeaux Métropole occupies a central position in the territorial organization of southwestern France, acting as a coordinating level among member communes for the implementation of metropolitan-scale public policies. It also works alongside other local authorities, notably the Gironde department and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, as well as with the national government, on shared planning and development projects.
