Sobre Communauté d'agglomération - La Rochelle

The Communauté d'agglomération de La Rochelle, now known as La Rochelle Agglomération, is a French local government body classified as a public establishment for intercommunal cooperation (EPCI) with its own tax authority. Its headquarters are located in La Rochelle, the prefecture of the Charente-Maritime department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, on the Atlantic coast. It brings together several municipalities within the La Rochelle basin, forming a territory that combines urban, coastal, rural and island areas around the central city. Established during the intercommunal reforms of the late 1990s in France, this structure succeeded earlier forms of cooperation between municipalities in order to pool certain responsibilities at the scale of the living area. It is part of the broader movement toward territorial rationalization, which aimed to equip French urban areas with bodies capable of carrying out public policies beyond the municipal level, particularly in planning, transport and economic development. Its boundaries have evolved over the years, with the progressive incorporation of neighboring municipalities. The agglomeration exercises responsibilities in several areas typical of intercommunal action: economic development, spatial planning, organization of public transport, housing policy, water and sanitation management, environmental protection, waste management, as well as tourism and cultural promotion of the coastal territory. It also takes part in structuring projects related to sustainable mobility, ecological transition and the economic attractiveness of the La Rochelle region, coordinating its action with member municipalities, the department and the region. Its geographic position, between the ocean and marshlands, shapes part of its mission toward the preservation of natural environments and the promotion of maritime heritage. The website agglo-larochelle.fr is the institutional site of this local authority, presenting its responsibilities, its political and administrative organization, along with practical information and online services intended for residents and users of the territory.
