About Métropole de Nantes
Nantes Métropole is a public inter-communal cooperation body with its own taxation powers, established under the status of a "métropole" as defined by French local government law. This administrative structure brings together several municipalities around the city of Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique department, within the Pays de la Loire region. Its origins date back to the early forms of inter-communal cooperation established in the Nantes urban area from the 1990s onward, which were successively transformed into an urban community and, following national territorial reforms, into a metropolis with expanded powers.
The territory of Nantes Métropole covers the central part of the Nantes basin, along the Loire river, and comprises around twenty municipalities bordering or close to the central city. This inter-communal organization is one of the major levels of local governance in western France, alongside the department and the region, and forms part of the broader landscape of major French metropolises created under the law on the modernization of territorial public action.
Nantes Métropole exercises powers transferred by its member municipalities in areas such as spatial planning, urban development, transport and mobility, economic development, housing, water and waste management, as well as certain cultural and sporting facilities of metropolitan interest. It is administered by a metropolitan council composed of elected representatives designated by the member municipalities, chaired by a president elected from among its members, and has its own administrative and technical departments to implement its public policies. It also coordinates urban planning actions and cooperation with other local authorities in the territory.
The nantesmetropole.fr website is the official institutional site of this local authority, presenting its missions, organization, news, and online services for residents and businesses of the territory.
