About Métropole de Lyon
The Métropole de Lyon is a French territorial authority with a special status, established on 1 January 2015. Its creation resulted from the merger between the former Urban Community of Lyon and the competences previously exercised by the Rhône General Council over the same territory. This configuration gives the Métropole de Lyon a hybrid status, unique in France, combining powers usually assigned to intercommunal bodies with others traditionally belonging to departments.
The authority's headquarters are located in Lyon, within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its area of jurisdiction covers a group of municipalities forming the Lyon urban area, including Lyon itself, Villeurbanne, Vénissieux and Caluire-et-Cuire. The territory of the Rhône department was split on this occasion, with the Métropole now exercising its powers over this urban perimeter, distinct from the remaining rural part of the department, which remained under conventional departmental administration.
The Métropole de Lyon carries out a wide range of missions relating to spatial planning, urban development, housing, road infrastructure and transport, as well as environmental management and the protection of natural areas. It is also involved in economic development and territorial attractiveness. As a legacy of its former departmental competences, it holds responsibilities in the field of social action, including social insertion, child protection, and support for elderly people and people with disabilities. This position makes the authority a central actor in local governance, tasked with steering structuring public policies across a metropolitan living area, in coordination with member municipalities, the region and the State.
The website grandlyon.com is the official institutional website of the Métropole de Lyon, presenting its competences, news and online services intended for residents and users of the territory.
