About Communauté d'agglomération - Grand Angoulême
The Grand Angoulême Urban Community is a public inter-municipal cooperation body (EPCI) with its own taxation powers, located in the Charente department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. It emerged from the evolution of earlier inter-municipal structures, including a former district, before being transformed into an urban community around the turn of the 2000s, as part of the national movement to strengthen cooperation among neighboring municipalities. Its headquarters are located in Angoulême, the prefecture town of the department, which forms the central urban hub of the territory.
The area covered by the urban community includes the city of Angoulême and a group of surrounding municipalities, forming a territory that combines urban, peri-urban and rural zones around the Angoulême living area. This inter-municipal organization fits within the French institutional landscape of medium-sized urban communities, positioned between large metropolitan areas and rural municipal groupings. The territory is crossed by transport routes connecting Angoulême to other towns in the region, contributing to its geographic positioning.
Like any urban community, Grand Angoulême exercises powers transferred by its member municipalities in areas such as economic development, spatial planning, housing, urban policy, management of urban transport, waste collection and treatment, as well as actions related to culture, sport and the environment. It thus constitutes an intermediate level of local governance, responsible for pooling certain public services and ensuring coherence in the planning and development of the territory at the scale of the Angoulême living area.
The website grandangouleme.fr is the official institutional site of the Urban Community, presenting its powers, organization, news, and practical information intended for residents of the territory.
