About Communauté d'agglomération - Béthune Bruay Artois Lys Romane

The Communauté d'agglomération Béthune Bruay Artois Lys Romane is a public inter-municipal cooperation body (EPCI) located in the Pas-de-Calais department, in the Hauts-de-France region of France. It was formed through the merger of several pre-existing inter-municipal structures, including those organized around the towns of Béthune and Bruay-la-Buissière, as part of a territorial rationalization process carried out during the 2010s. This merger created one of the largest agglomerations in Pas-de-Calais, bringing together a significant number of communes around a living area historically shaped by mining and industrial activity. The agglomeration covers an extensive territory, at the crossroads of several urban and rural areas within the former mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, known for its industrial and landscape heritage. It lies close to major regional urban centers such as Lens, Arras and Lille, benefiting from a favorable geographic position between the Artois region and the Lys valley. This positioning makes it a transitional territory, both urban and rural, engaged in a process of economic reconversion following the decline of traditional mining activities. As an inter-municipal body, it exercises shared competences on behalf of its member communes in various fields such as economic development, land use planning, housing, transport, waste management, urban policy, as well as environmental and heritage preservation. It represents an intermediate level of governance between communes and departmental or regional authorities, responsible for carrying out structuring projects across the territory and coordinating local public policies for the benefit of residents and economic actors. The website bethunebruay.fr is the official institutional site of the Communauté d'agglomération, presenting its missions, organization, news, and the services and procedures offered to residents and member communes.
