Über Doubs (25)
The Doubs is a French department located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, in eastern France. It takes its name from the river that flows through it, whose winding course forms part of its natural border with Switzerland. Its territory extends from the Jura mountain range, characterized by mountainous and forested terrain, to more urbanized plains in the northwest. Besançon, a historic city known for its architectural heritage and industrial past linked to watchmaking, serves as its prefecture and the seat of departmental institutions.
As a territorial collectivity, the Doubs department constitutes a level of French public administration, governed by an elected deliberative assembly, the departmental council, which votes the budget and determines the main directions of local public action. This organization originates from the administrative division of France established at the end of the eighteenth century, which gradually shaped its current responsibilities and structure through successive decentralization reforms.
The department carries out missions in various areas directly affecting residents' daily lives: social action and solidarity toward elderly people, people with disabilities and children, management and maintenance of departmental roads, support for secondary schools, as well as participation in rural development and local planning. It also supports municipalities and intermunicipal bodies in areas such as culture, sport, tourism and environmental preservation, contributing to a balance between urban, peri-urban and rural areas within its territory.
The doubs.fr website is the department's institutional site, presenting its missions, organization and the services offered to residents and partner local authorities.
