The Lot is a French department located in the Occitanie region, in southwestern France. Created in 1790 during the administrative reorganization following the French Revolution, it takes its name from the river that flows through its territory and largely corresponds to the former province of Quercy. Its prefecture is the town of Cahors. The department borders Corrèze, Cantal, Aveyron, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne and Dordogne.
As a territorial authority, the Lot is administered by a departmental council, an elected assembly responsible for exercising the powers assigned to French departments. These include social welfare functions, such as support for elderly and disabled residents and child protection services, as well as management of the departmental road network, the construction and maintenance of middle schools (collèges), and support for territorial planning policies.
