Nîmes Métropole is a French intercommunal body, a communauté d'agglomération, which is a category of public establishment for inter-municipal cooperation (EPCI). Established in the early 2000s, it brings together several dozen municipalities around the central city of Nîmes, located in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region. Its administrative headquarters are located in Nîmes, which constitutes the main urban, economic and demographic hub of the intermunicipal territory.
The territory covered by Nîmes Métropole includes urban, peri-urban and more rural areas, situated at the crossroads of transport routes linking the Rhône valley, the Mediterranean coastline and the Cévennes region. The agglomeration exercises powers delegated by its member municipalities in areas such as economic development, spatial planning, public transport, water and sanitation management, waste collection and treatment, housing policy, and the promotion of heritage and tourism. It also plays a role in urban planning through reference documents such as the territorial coherence scheme or the intermunicipal local urban plan.
As an intermunicipal structure, Nîmes Métropole coordinates action among its member municipalities, pooling certain public services and carrying out development projects at a supra-municipal scale. It contributes to organising the urban transport network serving the agglomeration and takes part in developing business zones intended to strengthen the attractiveness of the Nîmes employment area. It is thus part of the French administrative organisation, alongside the Gard department and the Occitanie region, serving as a level of management and project development for the Nîmes living area.
