Sobre Métropole de Toulon Provence Méditerranée
The Métropole de Toulon Provence Méditerranée is a French local authority structured as a public inter-communal cooperation body with its own taxation powers, holding the status of "métropole" since 1 January 2018. It succeeds an agglomeration community established in the late 1990s and brings together the municipalities of the Toulon urban area around a shared territorial project. Its headquarters are located in Toulon, the capital of the Var department, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
The metropolitan area extends along the Mediterranean coastline and comprises around a dozen municipalities, including Toulon, La Seyne-sur-Mer, Hyères, La Garde, La Valette-du-Var, Six-Fours-les-Plages, Ollioules, Carqueiranne, Le Pradet, La Crau, Le Revest-les-Eaux and Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer. This territory is organized around the Toulon roadstead, a significant maritime area combining naval, port, tourism and residential activities, and it links a dense urban core with coastal and protected natural areas.
As a métropole, the institution exercises extended competences transferred from its member municipalities and, in certain areas, from the department or the region. It is involved in spatial planning and urban development, economic development, housing, transport and mobility, water supply and sanitation, waste collection and treatment, environmental protection, as well as support for port and tourism activities and for higher education and research. It thus serves as an intermediate level of governance between the municipalities, the department and the region, responsible for coordinating public policies across the Toulon living area.
