Sobre Le Mans
Le Mans Métropole is a French communauté urbaine, a local government structure falling within the framework of French intercommunality, grouping the city of Le Mans together with several surrounding communes in the Sarthe department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Originating from the transformation of an earlier intercommunal structure, it obtained the status of communauté urbaine during the 2010s, in line with successive territorial reforms aimed at strengthening cooperation between municipalities in France and pooling certain local competences.
Its territory is organized around the central city of Le Mans, the administrative seat of the Sarthe department, and covers a living area structured by the Le Mans agglomeration. The member communes, of varying sizes, form a coherent whole in urban, economic and social terms, connected by transport infrastructure, particularly rail and road links, which join Le Mans to the main transport routes of western France. This geographic position gives the entity a role as a balancing pole between neighboring rural areas and the larger urban centers of the region.
As a communauté urbaine, Le Mans Métropole exercises extended competences transferred by its member communes, notably in the areas of territorial planning, economic development, housing, public transport, management of public spaces, environmental matters and urban policy. It is administered by a communal council made up of elected representatives designated by the member communes, and led by a president elected from among its members. It thus constitutes an intermediate level of local governance, situated between the communes and the department, contributing to the structuring of public policy across the Le Mans living area.
