Sobre Région Occitanie
The Occitanie Region is a French territorial authority created through the 2015 territorial reform, which merged the former regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées effective January 1, 2016. It constitutes one of the thirteen administrative regions of metropolitan France and is located in the south of the country, bordering Spain, Andorra, and the Mediterranean Sea. Its territory encompasses thirteen departments, stretching from the Pyrenees to the Massif Central and covering one of the largest areas among French regions. Toulouse serves as the regional capital and main administrative seat, while Montpellier also hosts significant regional services, reflecting the dual-center organization inherited from the merger.
As a territorial authority, the Occitanie Region exercises competencies defined by law across several areas of public action. It is involved notably in economic development, spatial planning, regional transportation, vocational training, and the management of secondary schools. It also contributes to supporting higher education and research, cultural and sports development, and the implementation of environmental and agricultural policies tailored to the specific characteristics of its territory, which combines urban, rural, and coastal areas.
The institution is governed by a regional council, composed of elected officials chosen through direct universal suffrage during regional elections, and led by a president elected among its members. This deliberative assembly defines the strategic direction of the authority and votes on its budget, within the framework of competencies granted to French regions. The Occitanie Region holds a significant position among French regional authorities, both due to the extent of its territory and the diversity of its socio-economic challenges, ranging from dynamic metropolitan areas to rural and mountainous zones.
The laregion.fr website is the official institutional site of the Occitanie Region, presenting its missions and public policies while offering services and information intended for residents, businesses, and territorial stakeholders.
