Grand Besançon Métropole is a French urban community (communauté urbaine), a category of intermunicipal public establishment bringing together several municipalities around a central city. It is located in the Doubs department, within the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, and structures its territory around the city of Besançon, the department's capital. This territorial authority resulted from the evolution of former intercommunal structures, which progressively merged and expanded their scope before acquiring the status of urban community, a form of intermunicipal cooperation endowed with broader competencies than communities of agglomeration.
