Sobre Région Guadeloupe
Région Guadeloupe is a French territorial authority holding the status of an overseas region, corresponding to the territory of Guadeloupe, an archipelago located in the Lesser Antilles, within the Caribbean Sea. The regional territory includes the islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, forming the main island, along with several dependencies such as Marie-Galante, the Saintes Islands, and La Désirade. The seat of the regional institution is located in Basse-Terre, which also hosts the prefecture.
The regional status was established following the decentralization laws of the early 1980s, which created regional councils in the French overseas departments, Guadeloupe having been a French department since 1946. Unlike Martinique and French Guiana, which merged their departmental and regional institutions into a single collectivity in 2015, Guadeloupe retained two separate authorities, the departmental council and the regional council, the latter commonly referred to as Région Guadeloupe. The institution is governed by a regional council composed of elected members, whose president leads the regional executive.
Within its areas of competence, Région Guadeloupe is involved in economic development, territorial planning, transport, vocational training, the management of secondary schools, culture, tourism, and environmental matters. It also participates in regional cooperation with neighboring Caribbean states and territories and, as an outermost region, benefits from a particular status within the European Union, allowing access to certain European funds dedicated to territorial development. Through these activities, it contributes to the implementation of public policies suited to the geographic and economic specificities of the archipelago, working alongside other local authorities and state services present within the territory.
The website cr-guadeloupe.fr is the institutional website of the regional council of Guadeloupe, presenting its areas of competence, news, elected officials, and information related to regional public policies.
