Sobre Avignon
The city hall of Avignon is the municipal institution of the commune of Avignon, prefecture of the Vaucluse department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. Located in southeastern France, on the left bank of the Rhône, the city occupies a historic site marked by the presence of the papal court in the 14th century, during which several popes resided there. This heritage shaped a remarkable historic center, including the Palace of the Popes, the Saint-Bénézet bridge and the ramparts, an ensemble listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The commune, which spans an urban and peri-urban territory, constitutes an administrative, economic and cultural hub of the region.
The municipal administration is led by a mayor, elected by the municipal council itself chosen through direct universal suffrage of residents, assisted by deputy mayors responsible for thematic portfolios. Municipal services are organized into specialized departments covering the full range of responsibilities assigned to French communes, such as civil registry, urban planning, school affairs, social welfare, culture, green spaces and road maintenance. These services ensure the daily management of local affairs and the implementation of decisions made by elected bodies.
The local authority carries out its missions within the framework defined by the French General Code of Local Authorities, notably ensuring urban planning, maintenance of public facilities, organization of cultural events — the city being notably associated with an internationally renowned theater festival — as well as local economic development. It also acts in the fields of education, housing and community life, in coordination with other levels of local government and state services present in the Vaucluse territory.
The website avignon.fr is the official website of the Avignon city hall, providing administrative and municipal information as well as online services for residents and users.
