Über Île-de-France

The Île-de-France Region is a French territorial authority, one of eighteen regions in the country. Its current organization stems from the decentralization laws of the early 1980s, which granted French regions the status of fully-fledged territorial authorities. The entity originates from the District de la région parisienne, created in 1961, which was transformed into a regional public body in 1976 under the name Île-de-France before acquiring full territorial authority status in 1982. Its administrative headquarters is located in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, in Seine-Saint-Denis. The regional territory encompasses eight departments: Paris, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, and Val-d'Oise. Situated at the heart of the Paris basin, this region constitutes the political and administrative capital area of France, encompassing the city of Paris itself. It is organized around a regional council, headed by an elected executive, which sets overall policy directions and adopts the regional budget. The Region exercises competencies in several areas defined by law, including economic development, territorial planning, vocational training, the construction and maintenance of upper secondary schools, and support for culture and heritage. It also plays a role in public transport and mobility through dedicated bodies, in housing policy, in environmental protection, and in supporting research and innovation stakeholders. To this end, it establishes partnerships with departments, intermunicipal bodies, and municipalities within its territory, as well as with economic and civil society actors. The website iledefrance.fr is the Region's official institutional site, presenting its areas of competence, news updates, and support programs, along with practical information intended for residents and stakeholders across the territory.
