The Eure department is a French territorial authority (collectivité territoriale) created in 1790 during the administrative reorganization of the national territory following the French Revolution. Its boundaries were drawn from portions of the former province of Normandy, notably the généralité of Rouen. Since the 2016 territorial reform, it has been one of the five departments composing the Normandy region, alongside Seine-Maritime, Calvados, Manche and Orne. Its prefecture is located in Évreux, and its territory lies between the departments of Oise, Eure-et-Loir, Seine-Maritime and Calvados, in northwestern France.
The territory of Eure has a predominantly rural and periurban character, crossed by the Seine valley and dotted with recognized heritage and landscape sites, such as the village of Giverny and the Château Gaillard. Its position, at the edge of the Paris and Rouen metropolitan areas, makes it a transitional space between urban zones and agricultural countryside.
As a territorial authority, the department exercises the competencies established by law: social welfare action (integration support, child protection, assistance to elderly and disabled persons), management of departmental roads, construction and maintenance of lower secondary schools (collèges), as well as a role in culture, heritage, environment and rural development. It is administered by a departmental council composed of elected representatives from the territory's cantons, led by a presidency, and acts in coordination with state services, intercommunal bodies, municipalities and the Normandy regional council within the framework of the distribution of public responsibilities in France.
