Über Communauté d'agglomération - Provence Verte
The Communauté d'agglomération Provence Verte is a French intercommunal public body (EPCI) located in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its administrative seat is located in Brignoles, the central town of the territory. It brings together several municipalities in the central Var area, united around a shared project of local development and territorial planning. Its name, "Provence Verte" (Green Provence), refers to the wooded and rural character of this part of Provence, distinct from the more urbanized coastal areas of the department.
This intercommunal structure results from the gradual evolution of cooperation between municipalities in the area, which had been underway for several decades under various legal forms before reaching the status of communauté d'agglomération. This transformation allowed for an expanded scope of action and strengthened competencies exercised collectively for the benefit of member municipalities, while preserving the territorial identity associated with the name Provence Verte, also used to designate a tourist office and various initiatives promoting the territory.
The responsibilities of the Communauté d'agglomération Provence Verte cover a range of areas typically assigned to French intercommunal bodies: economic development and business support, spatial planning within the community's area, housing policy, household waste management, environmental protection and enhancement, as well as tourism and cultural promotion of the territory. It also acts in cross-cutting areas such as mobility, water, and sanitation, in coordination with member municipalities and other local authorities within the department and region. It thus constitutes an intermediate level of governance between municipalities and the department, tasked with pooling certain public services and carrying out projects of shared community interest beyond the scope of individual municipalities.
