Über Mairie de Belfort
The Belfort town hall constitutes the municipal administration of the commune of Belfort, a French town located in the Territoire de Belfort department, of which it serves as the prefecture, within the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. This local authority exercises the powers assigned to French communes under the General Code of Territorial Authorities, under the authority of the mayor and the municipal council elected by residents. Belfort occupies a distinctive geographical position, at the crossroads between the Vosges and Jura mountain ranges, within the gap that bears its name and that has historically made the city a strategic passage between the Rhine and Rhône basins.
The municipal institution traces its origins to the development of the fortified city, whose history is marked by several sieges, notably that of 1870-1871, which brought the city particular recognition and led to the construction of the Lion of Belfort. Having become the administrative seat of the Territoire de Belfort upon the creation of this department in 1922, the commune developed a structured municipal administration to meet the needs of an urban area that was at once industrial, military, and administrative. The city thus established itself as a reference urban center for the northern part of Franche-Comté.
Within the scope of its responsibilities, the Belfort town hall manages local services intended for the population: civil registry, urban planning, social welfare, management of educational, cultural, and sports facilities, and maintenance of roads and public spaces. It also participates in animating local life, supporting associations, and leading urban development projects, in coordination with other levels of local authorities and state services present in the territory.
The website belfort.fr is the institutional site of the commune, presenting information related to municipal organization, administrative procedures, and services offered to residents and users.
